Fitness: Jogging Day 1

Yesterday I got a pair of running shoes and talked about starting up training. Well today was no talk and all action!

I went for a jog and it felt great. Well, not sipping sangria on the beach great, but doable.

Today my old Dungeon’s Master sent me some tips on how to train for jogging from zero. Namely he brought my attention to a program called “Couch to 5K” – for which I found a free app.

Basically you warm up with a brisk walk for 5 minutes, then jog for 60 seconds, then walk for 90 seconds, then jog, then walk, etc for 20 minutes. Repeat 3 times a week and then you up the training (90 seconds jog, 60 seconds walk) until you get to 5K in 9 weeks.

Honestly I was dubious about the 5K idea when I first downloaded the app this morning, but after the first session I have to say I believe I can do it. Especially because you can plug in your music at the same time and just have the app let you know when to jog and when to walk.

The only thing I’m worried about is making sure to stay on track once I’m working full time – in other words from tomorrow on. I’m sure I can do it, but having not worked such hours for so long (and never having worked full time in Montreal during rush hour wherein I’ll be commuting for roughly 3-4 hours a day), it’s hard to gauge how tired I’ll be during the week.

All I can say for now is I can’t wait to hit the pavement again.
